to start with, I had a group tutorial. There wasn’t as many people there, however it was quite good as I got some good feedback on my work which helped me realize I was going in the right direction with what I was making. Seeing my work compared to my classmate’s was nice, and it gave me a bit of inspiration of what I’d want to add in my project. (For instance, one person imported some extra external models, which made the environment a lot more fun and colourful to look at.)
we looked at more blender later in the week, I do find it a bit confusing however the sessions are so great and in a way, relaxing. I really like how blender can be applied to VR, and I hope to get better at using it at least to a level where I remember all the controls. The atmosphere of learning blender was quite nice, and as a class we had some nice conversations surrounding it. Seeing how important it is to optimize your models was good as well, as not all models will be seen up close. I felt like I learned some good things about model usage.
Later on, I attended a lecture hosted by James from Urban tech creative, I really liked how he combined storytelling and virtual reality together, when he mentioned how he made a VR experience for showcasing the stories of women from Afghanistan and how they are affected by a lack of education. The small details such as how the user has to ‘sit’ at a table adjacent the speaker, so that they could cover up the fact that the speaker’s image was using a 2D model was genius. It made me think of how I could use innovative shortcuts to make life less complicated when designing projects. I also really liked his demonstration with Mixed reality and the wind turbines and how you can use your hands as if they are controllers, I didn’t know this was much of a possibility before. It made me wonder if one day, VR will have the option to use hands rather than controllers as a cursor as it could give an even more more immersive experience.
So far, I’m happy with how my VR project is turning out. I need to work through the tutorial more though. I made a bubble blower, and with some size adjustments of the bubble prefab I feel that the bubble now more closely matches the loop of the wand – which I felt was important for immersive purposes. I found making the script for it a little bit difficult as I have never worked with C sharp before, so I’ll have to look into it later on so I can familiarize myself with it
