Week 1 reflection

Academic workshop

On Tuesday, I attended a session where I recapped my beginners level of HTML knowledge and learnt to use GitHub. During this session, I worked with others editing a document and learnt the importance of committing my code and pushing to the origin, which I find tricky to figure out when editing a document with many people, but I found it easier when I tried it myself.

Several other students and I came up with a story that we each placed onto a webpage with paragraph tags. It appeared messy as it had no styling but at the end of the lesson I managed to load it onto GitHub which made me happy.

I didn’t realise how useful github was for collaborating and storing code, I like how I can access my own code on any computer as long as I’m signed into my github account. I want to get better at using it in the future, as it’s a useful website to learn.

VR drawing workshop

On Wednesday we got a chance to meet the level 5 diploma students for creative computing. We worked together to communicate our ideas of ‘Utopia’ into a 3D VR space. I felt like I was able to communicate my ideas nicely to my group, which I felt good about. I hope I can continue to share my ideas in a productive manner.

Later on, my group had some fun testing out the software on the VR controllers, we all took turns. Honestly I felt as though on this day we weren’t the most organised with what we built in our world, but getting to play around with the VR controllers was useful for the next day where I joined my very first make it Manifest(o) with the rest of my group. In the future better planning is needed

Make it Manifest(o)!

on Thursday, me and my group from the day prior restarted our world. We tried to have a more coherent plan on paper before we started using the VR headsets, which I think would be useful for any other group projects in the future.

We had a good conversation of the features we liked from the previous day, such as the idea of having a biblically accurate angel in our ‘utopia’. I decided to take on the challenge of making a giant biblically accurate angel with wings. As much as it looks like chaos, it was very organised. My group made sure all members had a turn with the VR headset as well as allowing everyone to add suggestions to other people’s creations.

I felt as though I learnt some good collaboration skills, as I’ve not been the best at sharing my ideas confidently in the past. I definitely want to use VR in the future as it would compliment my digital art background, but I’m not sure how I’d want to use it just yet. I loved open brush and loved the creativity that it brings.
