Week 1

The first week of my second year at university!

Joining back was a bit of a shock to the system, as I still feeling I am getting back into routine after a long break, however I feel as though I am transitioning back into university life faster as I am more familiar with the process.

To start with, we looked at using the terminal and adding file directories, I’ve always been curious about them and what they can do and they were simpler to use than I originally thought. I’m still far from being fluent at using terminal commands, but the acronyms are simple enough and aren’t difficult to figure out thankfully.

Looking through typescript, it reminds me a lot of css. I’ve forgotten parts of CSS but after refreshing myself its very easy to re-remember. I’m happy to see that the same concepts from CSS can be used such as justifyContent and alignItems.

Originally, I couldn’t figure out how to set up white keys next to each other, however with a bit of discussion with a classmate I managed to figure it out after a small change in syntax was fixed.

Later on in the week, I attended the make it manifesto. It was a nice opportunity to be able to meet the students in the year below and in the new computer science course.

Together with a friend I worked on a make it manifesto projector project using MadMapper.

At first we tried to add scenes which we tried to add with a video, this didn’t work well so we just added one scene as an overlay for our chosen video — bad apple, a popular video on the internet which features a monochromatic animation perfect to experiment with overlays. I figured out how to implement the video myself, which didn’t take that long however I was quite proud of myself. It made me feel really good when I could how to implement a video to MadMapper to another group. At the last moment, we also used a table as a surface that we lined up with MadMapper to have a small circular rotating head. I felt this was a good touch as it added more interest.

Overall this week has been quite eventful, I managed to run into a lot of old friends, some of whom I haven’t seen in a very long time. I enjoyed taking them to visit my manifesto project, seeing those who are close to me enjoy what I create makes me really happy and inspires me to keep moving forward with my work.

During the weekend I also attended a cosplay convention. I saw a lot of creative people there, someone told me how they used an arduino and LCD screen as a part of their cosplay, this really amazed me. I also saw another great use of technology when a remote controlled R2D2 followed me around. It was great to be surrounded by such passionate people who have perfected their craft.
